Palestinian designer bridges generations through jewellery

London-based designer Zeina Al-Khaznachi is reimagining the ancestral art form of Tatreez (embroidery) by creating contemporary pieces that allow wearers to carry their heritage with them.

Al-Khaznachi, founder of Asherah Jewellery, said: “As a Palestinian raised in the diaspora, I’ve always felt a deep connection to Tatreez, even though I’ve never seen my homeland.

“These patterns are more than decoration - they’re stories stitched in time. My work is about making that legacy tangible, so others can wear it close to their hearts.”

Jewellery-making began as a personal journey for Al-Khaznachi, who taught herself bead weaving as a way to reconnect with her roots. Drawing on the geometric motifs and symbolism of Tatreez, she began crafting pieces that honour Palestinian heritage while appealing to contemporary tastes.

Using high-quality materials like Japanese glass beads and recycled silver, each design tells a unique story, inspired by specific regions of historic Palestine.

“Tatreez carries an entire visual language of resistance, identity, and community,” she explains. “By translating these motifs into jewellery, I’m not just preserving tradition - I’m ensuring it evolves. Every piece is a bridge between generations, a way to keep these stories alive.”

With two collections released annually - vibrant tones for spring/summer and neutral palettes for autumn/winter - Asherah Jewellery has become a symbol of cultural pride for Palestinians in the diaspora and beyond.

Al-Khaznachi’s work has also sparked interest among advocates of artisanal craftsmanship and ethical fashion, proving that heritage and modernity can coexist.
